At Oaklands, we are blessed to have well-known chef Kathy Romer-Lee in the kitchen. With her expert team, Kathy will delight your palate with a memorable culinary experience, while you enjoy the splendid vistas and tranquil setting of your country retreat.
Our daily chalkboard menu offers delicious home-style food that is unfussy, but big on flavour – a very good example of ‘veld to plate’.
Meals can be enjoyed in a variety of settings to suit the mood and season – the cosy restaurant for colder evenings, and for those balmy nights and sun-kissed mornings we have the terrace, where you can unwind or start your day with an unsurpassed view of the mountains in the distance.
Breakfasts are a hearty affair, preparing you for a day of adventure. Traditional English breakfasts, delicious omelettes with a fiery touch of homemade chilli sauce on the side or crispy croissants with homemade jams, and compotes are just some of the delights we have on offer.
Lunch and dinner are always a treat, with our daily chalkboard menu offering delicious home-style food that is unfussy, but big on flavour. A very good example of ‘veld to plate’. Locally sourced ingredients are combined cleverly to create robust and tasty dishes, like our Dargle Valley pork ribeye roast that has people returning from far and wide.
The selection also includes a rich variety of starters and desserts, each one more palate-pleasing than the previous. There is no set menu at our restaurant and meals change according to which locally produced ingredients and fresh home-grown produce make their way into our kitchen, giving our talented chefs the freedom to produce spontaneous and unique creations each day.
The restaurant is open daily, but we request that you confirm your booking and seating preferences.
Breakfast: from 8am / Lunch: from midday / Dinner: from 7pm
The dedicated team
Executive chef and doyenne of the kitchen, Kathy Romer-Lee conjures up her magic with the superb versatility of a qualified master craftsman.
Kathy earned her cordon bleu certificate from Silwood Kitchen in 1990, after which her culinary adventures began. She sailed from Cape Town to England via Palma de Mallorca on a 60-foot ketch.
Highlights of her time in the north include a stint with the famous writer Roald Dahl and his wife, Liccy, working at a London city restaurant and a fine-dining eaterie in Yorkshire, and running a chalet in the French Alps for a season. After returning to South Africa, Kathy worked at Boschendal and Vergelegen wine estates and then Londolozi Game Reserve before partnering with Ken Forrester at 96 Winery Road on the Western Cape Wine Route. She also ran her own catering enterprise, Pomegranate Foods, before being wooed by Oaklands Country Manor in 2008. Kathy moved to Natal to take up the baton and baster as executive chef.
Assisted by second-in-command Johnson Ndlovu and his able team, Kathy maintains an energetic and industrious kitchen. Innovative cooking methods, combined with the finest ingredients and a keen attention to detail ensure that each guest at Oaklands is treated to a unique and indulgent dining experience.
