Oaklands Country Manor

Oaklands Country Manor

Oaklands Country Manor is located halfway between Johannesburg and Durban – an easy three-hour drive from either King Shaka International Aiport and OR Tambo just 7 kilometres off of the N3 highway.  A small, country hotel off the beaten track, we are a short drive from spectacular battlefields and an ideal stopover on the way to Fugitives Drift, Nambiti Game Reserve, and the Drakensberg.

We offer award-winning food and a multitude of activities – from mountain biking to birdwatching or simply sipping the country’s amazing wines and reading a great book.  Whatever your pleasure, we are here to create a home away from home for everyone – with kids, without and those looking for a romantic getaway.

The Tully Family

Oaklands Country Manor is owned and run by Lady Caroline Bruce, together with her sisters Kathy Romer-Lee, Annie Barnard, and her brother Simon Tully.

This fun-loving family grew up in close-knit communities in Lesotho and then the eastern Free State, and trace their heritage back to Irish fortune-seekers who settled in the Northern Cape during the early diamond-mining days in the area. Between them, their hospitality, knowledge of the land, and care for the community are second to none.

We have well-schooled horses – so no matter your level of expertise you will be able to enjoy the ride. If you are wanting to do it for the first time, play a great game of polo or go for a wonderful out ride it is all available.

Battlefield Tours

Several old battle sites surround Ladysmith, a 45-minute drive from Oaklands, namely Spioenkop, Wagon Hill, Colenso, Elandslaagte, Nicholson’s Nek, Thukela Heights, Gun Hill and Lombard’s Kop. The historical importance of these locations is marked by monuments, sculptures, gun emplacements, museums and military cemeteries. Registered local tour guides can accompany visitors to the old battlefields, and detailed maps and brochures are available from the Ladysmith Tourism Information Office.

Spioenkop

Spioenkop is steeped in South African history and natural beauty. The battlefield is an easy 30km drive from Oaklands, with Spieonkop Dam a further 10km away. The Drakensberg

The Drakensberg is Southern Africa’s highest mountain range and one of the region’s most beautiful and fascinating geological features. A World Natural Heritage site, the Drakensberg boasts remarkably beautiful land formations, including snow-capped peaks, rolling grasslands, river valleys, plunging waterfalls and rocky gorges.

The Natal Midlands

The Natal Midlands is one of the province’s most remarkable and beautiful regions, prized for its rich natural splendour and charmingly rustic atmosphere. The landscape features rolling hills, lush forests, gentle rivers, tumbling waterfalls, mountain foothills and green farmlands – a perfect setting for a day of walking, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, or simply appreciating the great outdoors. The area boasts a number of pristine nature reserves where picnicking, trout fishing, watersports and birdwatching are popular pastimes.

Food at Oaklands

At Oaklands, we are blessed to have well-known chef Kathy Romer-Lee in the kitchen.
