Things to do for:
Sterkfontein
Sterkfontein Dam is a vast expanse of crystal clear water surrounded by lush plant life and rocky mountain slopes. Several hiking and walking trails guide visitors through this exquisite 18000 hectare landscape, which boasts a rich diversity of vegetation and birdlife.
Water sport and outdoor activities
Conditions at Sterkfontein are often windy, making the 7000 hectare dam a popular location for water sports, particularly sailing and fishing. The reserve hosts the annual Catamaran Championships every February, where sailors from all over come to compete on the dam.
Hiking, biking and game viewing are also popular activities at Sterkfontein. There are a number of trails going through the terrain which is a miscellany of open bush veld, forest canopies and mountain ravines.
Diverse plant and animal life
Nature enthusiasts will spot highveld protea, wild myrtle, redwood and silver sugarbush, as well as koko tree, yellowwood and black bark in more sheltered kloofs.
Around 200 types of bird have been recorded at Sterkfontein, including the bald ibis, buffstreaked chat, ground woodpecker, Cape vulture, martial eagle and secretary bird.
Sterkfontein is also home to a number of small buck species such as grey rhebuck, mountain reedbuck and oribi.
