A Springtime Drakensberg Retreat

With winter on its way out, springtime in the Northern Drakensberg is bliss before the summer storms. So why not plan a mountain escape to Oaklands Country Manor?

Spring at Oaklands

When spring sets in at the Drakensberg, the countryside comes to life. Oak trees burst with bright green leaves, flowers begin to bloom, and the landscape transforms from grey to green. But there are plenty of reasons (other than the change of seasons) to spring into action at Oaklands. Our grounds and surrounds offer a range of activities for every kind of outdoor enthusiast.

Hike into the Drakensberg

Before summer’s unpredictable weather rolls in, take a walk on the mild side at Oaklands or hike to the Drakensberg’s peaks. The manor grounds boast a variety of walking trails through the Kwa-Zulu Natal countryside and learn a thing or two about the indigenous cultures, fauna and flora. You can opt for a self-paced leisurely walk or a guided one. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also hike into the nearby Drakensberg where the mountain’s indigenous wild flowers are in bloom.

Springtime Bass Fishing

The Northern Drakensberg is a firm fishing favourite for bass fishermen and spring is a great time to wet a line! If you fancy yourself a bit of a bass boss, you’re in luck; springtime is spawning season, which means more aggressive feeding. Oaklands has three well-stocked bass dams on the estate that operate on a catch-and-release basis.

Heritage Day Weekend at Oaklands

With a wide variety of outdoor activities on offer at Oaklands, you’ll be tempted to spend every waking moment soaking in the springtime sun. But evenings and early mornings can still be chilly, so we’ll forgive you for wanting to cosy up to your bedroom fireplace for as long as possible – you’re on holiday after all…
